From thrilling outdoor activities to serene relaxation spots, the Surf Shack Team has put together this list of 30 fun-filled adventures to help you make the most of your time on the island. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, get ready to experience the best that Maui has to offer!
1. Honu at Hoʻokipa Beach with a Kiawe BBQ Plate from Aloha ʻāina BBQ
Hoʻokipa Beach is famous for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) resting on the shore. There are often dozens of them on the sand. The waves also attract world-class surfers, wind-surfers and kite-surfers. Just a short distance past Hoʻokipa is a favorite local chef featuring Traditional Kiawe BBQ that's not to miss and absolutely worth the drive from the west side!
Tips: Stop to enjoy the view from the lookout before driving or walking down to the beach, but make sure to stop and see the honu near the cliff by the first lifeguard tower. Respect the turtles by keeping a safe distance of at least 10 feet. Many recommend visiting around sunset, but there are dozens of turtles most of the day. Take your BBQ plate or simply pick up a meal to enjoy later - Beef Brisket, Huli-Huli Chicken, Kalua Pork, and Wasabi Mac Potato Salad are our favorites!
2. Snorkel at Honolua Bay
Honolua Bay is a marine preserve known for clear waters and abundant sea life. Great for snorkeling and diving.
Tips: Access is via a short trail from the side of the road dirt parking lot. Mornings have the calmest waters for snorkeling. The shore is filled with large smooth rocks so it's not ideal for sunbathing and definitely no sand castles at this beach.
3. Drive or Ride to Haleakala for Sunrise or Sunset
Witness breathtaking sunrises or sunsets from the summit of Haleakala, a dormant volcano.
Tips: Reservations required for sunrise (book early or try to get a last minute pass 3 days before). Dress warmly as it's extremely cold at the summit. Visit on a night with a small moon to really feel amongst the stars.
4. Hula Pie at Duke's Beachfront Restaurant
This iconic dessert - a towering slice of macadamia nut ice cream pie with fudge - is a must-try at Duke's.
Tips: Start by sharing a Hula Pie first before your meal and plan for sunset dining for an unforgettable view. Duke's regularly has live music in the outdoor seating area. Located just off of Kaʻanapali Beach, great for lunch, dinner or an afternoon cocktail and pie. Plan your visit along with a beach day.
5. Walk around Paia Town and Eat at Paia Fish Market
Paia is a small, laid-back surf town on Maui's North Shore (South of Kahului Airport) with shops featuring local artists, boutiques and swim & surf shops. Paia Fish Market, an iconic casual eatery, features fresh, locally caught fish and their prices won't break the bank.
Tips: Parking in Paia can be tight, so plan to walk around after your meal to explore nearby shops. Just before arriving at Paia, there is a free public lot on the mountain side of the road. Our favorite dishes are the Fish Tacos and Ahi Burger.
6. Drive the Road to Hana
This famous coastal drive with several one-way bridges offers lush rainforest views, waterfalls, and tropical scenery. Stop at the Garden of Eden and the Black Sand Beach at Waiʻanapanapa State Park.
Tips: Pack a picnic for the beach (food for purchase may be inconsistent) and leave early to avoid crowds. Plan for a long, full-day adventure. Advance reservations are required to enter Black Sand Beach. Drive with Aloha and be safe. While food availability is inconsistent, favorites include Huli-Huli Chicken at Red Sand Beach, Shaka Pops at the Hana Food Trucks and we can never turn down a stop for banana bread!
7. Nakalele Blowhole
A natural blowhole that shoots water into the air, visible from the road or by taking a short, yet moderately challenging steep hike. Located approximately 8 miles past Kapalua in West Maui along a scenic windy drive.

9. Whale Watch Tour (Winter Months)
From approximately November to April, take a boat tour or simply watch from the shoreline to see the magnificent humpback whales. Humpbacks migrate each year from Alaska for our warm and protected shallow waters to mate and for mother whales to give birth and raise their young calves.
Tips: There are a variety of boat and tour options. Book ahead during peak season. Learn about the Humpback Whales prior to your tour, visit the Maui Ocean Center and/or the Hawaii Wildlife Discovery Center.
10. Relax at the Beach - Black Rock, Kaʻanapali Beach
Every beach on Maui has something to offer. This scenic beach offers calm waters, smooth sand with few rocks, and snorkeling and cliff diving around Black Rock.
Tips: Sometimes visitors forget to stop, relax and enjoy the simple things. We highly recommend that you put your toes in the sand and look out and take in the beauty of Maui. Remember to wear a hat, consider a sun shirt, and only use Hawaiʻi compliant reef safe sunscreen. Respect the turtles by keeping a safe distance of at least 10 feet. Eagle Rays may be spotted in late summer. If you get too much sun, then grab Shave Ice at Big Wave located inside the Westin Nanea Resort (accessible from the beach).
11. Cool off with Shave Ice - What's your favorite?!!
This isn't a mainland Snow Cone, this is Hawaiian "Shave Ice" without the "d". Soft, fluffy and airy ice topped with tropical syrups to cool you off and indulge your sweet tooth.

12. Iao Valley State Park (Iao Needle)
Explore the lush Iao Valley and see the iconic Iao Needle rock formation.
Tips: A short hike leads you to stunning views of the valley and the Iao Needle. Reservations required. Even if you're not up for hiking, the drive takes you through old Wailuku town and into lush tropical foliage and streams. Continue your adventure hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail or, for a more leisurely option, start your day with a drive from West Maui by taking the West Maui Scenic Loop. Drive the route clockwise, when leaving West Maui to stay on the inside lane of the road (mountain vs cliff) for added safety - this road narrows to one lane in a few places, and may be best for experienced drivers. 13. Tasting Tour at Ocean Vodka & Kula Rum Distillery
Learn about sustainable, organic spirits made from sugarcane and deep sea water at this distillery, located on the slopes of Haleakala.
Tips: Stay a while longer to enjoy lunch with amazing Central Maui bi-coastal views including both the east and west coastlines. Pair with a visit to nearby Surfing Goat Dairy for a full afternoon experience.
14. Sample Goat Cheese at Surfing Goat Dairy
Watch goats play on surfboards at this working dairy on the slopes of Haleakala. Tours and tastings available of their award-winning goat cheeses and truffles.
Tips: Try a cheese sampler and take a tour to meet the goats. Bring extra crackers and your own beverage. Pair with a visit to Ocean Vodka & Kula Rum Distillery.
15. Walk or Jog the Kapalua Coastal Trail
A scenic, easy trail that hugs the coastline and offers breathtaking views of the ocean and nearby islands.
Tips: Start at Kapalua Bay and make your way north enjoying the views. Don't skip the path out to the seabird nesting area (we've seen baby seabirds in the fall). Stop at Fleming's Beach and visit the Burger Shack for a wagyu burger and milkshake (adult milkshake options available).
16. Find Your Favorite Mai Tai
Enjoy handcrafted Mai Tais at several restaurants and resorts across Maui. Popular Mai Tais include Peter Merriman's restaurants: Monkeypod Kitchen in Kaʻanapali and Merriman's Kapalua.

17. Discover the Maui Pineapple Tour
Learn how pineapples are grown and harvested in Maui on a guided tour of a working pineapple plantation. Sample fresh pineapple and take one home!
Tips: Book in advance, as tours fill up quickly, especially during the busy season. Do you know how to tell if your pineapple is ripe? Gently pull on a leaf from the center of the crown. If it pulls away easily, then the pineapple is ripe. Other indications of ripeness are if it has a strong pineapple fruit smell or if it is bright golden yellow. 18. Maui Ocean Center Aquarium
Get up close with native marine life including sharks, rays, and sea turtles at this state-of-the-art aquarium.
Tips: Spend some time at their immersive 3D humpback whale experience. Stop into Pacific Whale Foundation for a variety of quality souvenirs at reasonable prices that support a great cause. We especially like their super-comfy t-shirts made from recycled plastic. After hours you can attend Aquari-Om yoga (schedule on website).
19. Walk Around Makawao Town
Explore this charming, historic town known for its paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture. Visit local artisans, glassblowing demonstrations, and boutique shops.
Tips: Don't miss Hot Island Glass for live glass-blowing demonstrations. Take a lei making workshop or take home some fresh flowers at Haku Maui. Continue the journey with a 30-minute drive through lush tropical vegetation over to Aloha ʻāina BBQ and then to Hoʻokipa Beach to see the Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu).
20. Visit a Farmer's Market or Maui Swap Meet
Sample fresh, local fruit, banana bread, and artisan goods. Check for current locations and times.
Tips: Drive the route clockwise, when leaving West Maui to stay on the inside lane of the road (mountain vs cliff) for added safety - this road narrows to one lane in a few places, and may be best for experienced drivers. We love stopping into Karen Lei's to see items handmade by local artists.
22. Explore the Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm
Stroll through beautiful lavender fields while enjoying panoramic views of the island. The farm offers tours, a gift shop, and picnic spots.
Tips: Visit in the morning when the light is best for photos. If the humidity or heat is too much for you, the temperature in Kula is always cooler. Pair with a trip to the Upcountry Farmer's Market early Saturday mornings and then walk around the small town of Makawao. 23. Hike the Waihee Ridge Trail
A moderately challenging hike offering sweeping views of the West Maui Mountains, lush forests, and deep valleys. This magical trail is often misty.
Tips: Bring sturdy shoes and layers, as the weather can change quickly. Looking for more adventure, continue or start at the Iao Needle or a drive from West Maui by taking the West Maui Scenic Loop. Drive the route clockwise, when leaving West Maui to stay on the inside lane of the road (mountain vs cliff).
24. Attend a Traditional Hawaiian Luau
Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture with a traditional luau featuring local food, hula performances, fire dancers and live music.
Tips: There are several luaus on Maui offering something for everyone. Book in advance, as luaus often sell out. If your luau doesn't provide assigned seating, make sure to arrive early for the best seating. Many luaus offer an opportunity for professional photography of your group, so wear your favorite sundress or Aloha Shirt!
25. Bailey House Museum (Hale Hoʻike'ike)
Located in Wailuku, this museum offers a deep dive into Hawaiian history and culture, featuring artifacts, paintings, and exhibits from the pre-contact era through the missionary period.
Tips: The museum also showcases Maui's natural history, including an extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts. Hours are currently 10am-2pm Monday-Friday, confirm before you go.
26. Visit Hawaii Wildlife Discovery Center at Whalers Village
Located at Whalers Village shopping area, experience this extraordinary multimedia, interactive venue with stunning murals, photos and videos featuring native marine wildlife. Great for all ages, donation to enter. You can check current hours here.

27. Visit Maui Tropical Plantation
Explore beautifully landscaped grounds showcasing Maui's agricultural history. Take a tram tour to learn about crops like sugarcane, pineapple, and coffee, or enjoy dining at The Mill House restaurant with views of the West Maui Mountains.
Tips: Be sure to visit the gift shop for locally made products, local fruit, coffee and sweets. The tram tour is great for families and provides a fun overview of the plantation's offerings. 28. Take a Picture at the Sunflower Field (Spring/Summer)
During spring and early summer, Maui's sunflower fields bloom, creating a stunning backdrop for photos. These vibrant fields are part of a biodiesel project.
Tips: Pull over safely along the highway to snap your photos. Please avoid entering the fields and do not take any flowers as they are private property and part of ongoing agricultural research.
29. Visit Lappert's Hawaii Ice Cream at The Shops of Wailea & Stay for an Activity
Treat yourself to some of Hawaii's best hand made premium ice cream and sorbet at Lappert's, known for its unique flavors like Kauai Pie and Maui Mango. Afterward, stay for one of the free cultural performances or art shows held at The Shops of Wailea.
Tips: Enjoy your treat in a scrumptious fresh waffle cone, shop and stay for entertainment. Check The Shops of Wailea Event Schedule for activities like live hula shows, lei-making workshops, or art nights.
30. Dine at Mama's Fish House
One of Maui's most iconic restaurants, Mama's Fish House offers fresh, locally caught seafood with stunning ocean views. And while this restaurant is a splurge, the Polynesian-inspired decor and impeccable service make it a must-visit for foodies.
Tips: Advance reservations are highly recommended as they are often booked 3-6 months in advance. It's the same menu served all day, so grab a reservation at any time. The menu changes from time to time, but some of our not to miss items have been the Haleakala Beef and Papaya appetizer, the Tristan Lobster, Seafood Curry and the Short Ribs. Make sure to save room for dessert as the Black Pearl is quite an experience in flavors. Coffee drinkers can start or finish with a delicious Hawaiian Coffee Press made with local Kaʻanapali coffee. Arrive early to walk along the nearby beach and soak in the views before your meal. Large sea turtles are often seen on the beach and Hoʻokipa Beach, known for turtles basking in the sun, is just down the road.
